It was 5 years ago today that “Dottie” was born. It was a cold winter day, and upon notice that the time was at hand, I rushed to the delivery room, stormed in the door, and they brought her forth. A tall gentleman in brown scrubs came from the back and placed her on the counter. I produced ID, signed a form, and the UPS guy said she was all mine.
But wait….I really must share all the ultrasounds. What is worse than baby pictures? Not-yet-born baby pictures…
In constant contact with the doc (Luthier Steve Holst) we had to determine how Dottie was to say her name. The tailpiece! We decided Dottie must float like a feather, and so the markup on the left was the winner.
Then, Dottie’s beautiful curves had to be given form. Of course, built-in telephone service needed to be part of the deal. (See my name on the neck block?)
And then, the top and back….beautiful maple, cut, formed and pressed by hand by Dr. Steve:
And then she was all ready for the spraying room.
A beautiful light honey finish over maple with all ebony trimmings!
And the tailpiece inlay could not have come out better:
And the newborn opens her eyes for the first time:
Not long after her delivery, “Dottie” was photographed with Dottie, my mother:
And finally, Dottie on stage:
From conception to delivery. about 18 months.
For a five year-old, she has sure gotten around. Happy birthday “Dottie!”
